Certification as an American Heart Association Instructor involves four steps:
1)
Completion of the In-Person Instructor course (hands-on course)
2)
Completion of the Core Instructor course (self-paced CD course)

- 7.5 ANCC contact hours can be awarded for nurses

- 7.75 AMA PRA category 1 credits can be awarded for physicians
3)
Course Monitoring at a BLS or Heartsaver CPR & AED class (you may teach a class that we arrange at our office or

we can attend a class that you arrange)
4)
Affiliation with an AHA Training Center. If you have a training center that you would like to affiliate with, please provide a

letter of recommendation from the coordinator of that center. Otherwise, you can affiliate with our center. The annual
affiliation fee is $60.00.
Upon successful completion of the above, participants will receive an American Heart Association CPR Instructor certification
that is valid for two years and will be able to teach:

CPR & AED (adult / child / infant)
To maintain your certification, you are required to teach at least two classes per year and submit completed rosters to our
office within 3 days of each class (unless previous arrangements have been made). At the end of the two year period, you will
need to attend an update class to renew for another two-year period.
Course Description:
Participants will learn about the format of AHA classes, how to demonstrate CPR skills according to American Heart Association guidelines, how to correct faulty CPR performance, and how to fairly and accurately evaluate student performance.
While you will not learn CPR during the Instructor course, it will be reviewed and CPR competency will be evaluated. It is expected that you have good CPR skills and the ability to speak to groups. Attention will be paid to the 2005 to 2010 guideline changes and the addition of Hands-Only CPR.
You will gain familiarity with AHA video instruction, hands-on practice, and instructor led discussions. All available AHA materials will be available for you to review, as well as manikins, AED trainers, and other training equipment.
Upon successful completion of the one-day instructor class, the self-paced CD-ROM class, and your student teaching, you will be able to teach American Heart Association CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogen courses.
